Her room was quiet. There was no music, no sound from the tv. There was only the sound of her own breathing and singing of the birds that floated through her open window. The sun washed over her as she lay on her bed. Her thoughts drifted him much like they had the last few days. Leah had tried to make them stop repeatedly. She tried to remind herself that he was an outsider and that she still didn’t know much about him. But she found herself thinking of his eyes, the way their hands locked together and his scent. Then she would wonder what he was doing and where he was. And mostly she wondered if he was thinking about her too.
All this time thinking about him and she still hadn’t seen him. Not that she had given any opportunity to see him the last five days. She ignored his calls and left the house only to patrol which she insisted on doing on her own. Yes, Leah was avoiding David Pratt. He had her thoughts jumbled and her head spinning. Their dinner had been perfect. After everything she told him, he wanted to be with her. And she thought he was all she wanted.
But now she was torn. Part of her was saying yes and another part was saying no. Half of her regretted telling him what she had, letting him in. It was the half that reminded her he was an outsider and that she shouldn’t yet trust him. It told her that he talked too much, asked too many questions, and had even tricked her. It was the part of her that was weary of him and insisted on avoiding him. The other part of her just wanted to be near him, feel the heat of his body next to hers. It wanted her just to take that leap and just be with him. To throw caution to the wind. Leah sat up on her bed and looked out the window to the world outside. Maybe the idea of wanting to be with him terrified her more than he did.
She ran a hand through her hair with a soft sigh. It felt like things had gotten so complicated so quick. The only thing for certain was that she wouldn’t be able to avoid David for forever. Especially not with the pack dinner tonight. She couldn’t find an excuse not to go; it was at her house. And in just a couple hours everybody would be at her house. Leah got up from her bed and went to the window. She rested her hands on the window sill and leaned out just a bit looking at the forest behind her house. They were daring her. They hinted at freedom. She glanced behind her. There was no one home. She could run. There was no one to stop her. Except her thoughts of him.
She pushed herself away from the window with a deep exhale and went down the stairs to the kitchen. There were just a couple hours to get dinner ready so she needed to start now. And hopefully it would get her mind off of David for a little bit before he showed up. Leah turned on the radio and started grabbing things from the cupboards and fridge. Tonight they were having meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and rolls. To anyone else the amount of food she was going to be making would have looked like a lot, but shifters knew how to eat. As she moved about the kitchen, she started to focus on cooking and it wasn’t long before the kitchen was filled with delicious smell of cooking food.

His shirt slipped on nice and easy as he stood in the center of his bedroom, holding his cell in his hands. The device had been completely useless the past few days. How long has it been? Five days. Five days. And in those agonizingly suspenseful days, Leah Clearwater had ignored every single call he made to her. He called her dozens of times and lost count of how many times he had the number ready but just closed the damn thing because he just knew she wouldn't pick up. And if that wasn't bad enough, their patrolling schedules did not agree with one another. So they couldn't communicate naturally either. That was probably her doing as well. Frustrating. Absolutely frustrating. David sighed out loud as he pulled his shoes on. It wasn't a sigh of disappointment, though one would be necessary, but a sigh of anticipation. Tonight was a pack dinner at the Clearwater residence. There was no avoiding him now. Though this entire time he couldn't figure out...just why she was.
Locking the door behind him as he stepped out into the sun's rays, David couldn't help but think of that night. The words exchanged in the restaurant and park. How close they seemed to have grown...and yet here he was preparing to corner Leah Clearwater and get an answer out of her like some stranger. Either way he'd get his answer though. Leah should know that much. He passed his parked car deciding on walking to the Clearwater residence, it wasn't that far a walk and he needed more time to prepare for this encounter. Despite having been given five days to do so already.
The dinner was to start in a couple of hours but David wanted to have Leah to himself before everyone showed up. If the whole pack would be there then Leah would probably be even less willing to speak to him. The pack looming over them was also an obstacle. Not being able to keep secrets had its advantages on duty, but it was an absolute pain when it came to their personal lives. Luckily, he was always on patrol alone; not another mind eager to dig deep into his head and pull out detail after detail concerning that night, or what he was feeling and thinking. And he had found himself thinking about Leah a lot recently. Whether it was intentional or not.
What was he going to say? What did he want to say? "Why have you been ducking me?" seems like a nice place to start. Was he mistaken to think that they might actually... get together? It all felt right five nights ago, but now he wasn't so sure. He traversed through the forest terrain of La Push easily and nimbly, drawing closer and closer to the Clearwater residence. Leaves and twigs crunched under his shoes with each and every step. Maybe Leah had second thoughts. Perhaps he had put her off about the story of his parents. Or she just didn't think much of that night at all. Whatever her reason, he'd hear it from her, from her own mouth.
Could he blame her though? He was after all, an outsider. Jeez he hated that term. But it was an accurate label. She had every right to feel uneasy around him, feel suspicious. But he thought after their dinner he might have crossed that boundary. Whatever the reason he wasn't getting anywhere thinking to himself. Coming back to reality he noticed his nose tingled. There was a nice scent in the air, the smell of food.
Home cooked food that would make anyone, shifter or human, drool. He was already yards away from the Clearwater residence. It was a warm and welcoming looking house. Kind of ironic that it was where Leah lived, of all people. He stood there admiring the house as he took slow paces towards the wooden steps. The air around the house carried the familiar shifter smell, thanks to Leah and Seth no doubt, as well as a nice natural tangy smell. Apricots? He couldn't tell at the moment. The food was flooding any scents in his mind right now. They must have started cooking already, which made sense. The pack did eat like animals after all, best to start cooking early. He climbed the wooden steps to the door, stopping before it holding his fist in the air, reluctant to knock. Did he want to know why Leah was avoiding him?... Well there was only one way to find out. The closed fist hanging in the air began knocking on the wooden door several times. He waited when he didn't hear an answer or a stir, and knocked again, not revealing who he was. "Leah...It's David," he said in his usual bravado. He rested his arm against door as he leaned forward on the door, waiting for her to hopefully open the door. She wouldn't leave him standing outside would she? "Yeah, she would," he said aloud answering his own mental question.

There were moments while she was cooking that her mind drifted to him. Cooking hadn’t helped nearly as much as she would have liked it to. She wondered when he would show up and what he would say. Was he angry? She had not said a word to him in five days. Waiting for his arrival was making her somewhat anxious.
He should be angry. She would be angry if the roles were reversed. How many times had he called and she just let it ring? Or called and she hit ignore? There were too many to count, to remember. Leah was hiding from him. And that was the honest truth. She purposely avoided contact with him. If he had done it to her, she’d be furious. It wouldn’t have lasted so long. The she wolf would have marched through the woods and demanded an answer. But David just let her be.
After putting the meatloaf in the oven, she began preparing the potatoes. There was still plenty of time before the pack would arrive. But she was surprised David hadn’t shown up yet. He was giving her just a little more time to keep the space she had put between them. But he wouldn’t stay away much longer. David would show up, probably knock on the door and wait to be let in, and then there would be no more avoiding him.
Her mother, Sue, joined Leah in the kitchen to help with the dinner. She brought in fresh fruits and began to cut them up. Many of the pack members didn’t like to eat fruits but Sue, being a mom, tried to encourage them to eat them like they would eat meat. There were no words exchanged by mother and daughter. Sue was disappointed in Leah’s behavior with David. She tried to push Leah into calling him back several times. Each attempt only ended with yelling and harsh words and Leah’s storming off to her room. Leah stopped her own work and watched her mother carefully cut up the fruit.
After a moment, she looked down and sighed. Her mother was unhappy with her and she refused to talk to the only person she could think of the five days. She was so absorbed in thought that she didn’t hear the knock at the door. When she made no effort to move, her mother’s eyes flicked to her. ‘Go answer the door, Leah.’ She looked up suddenly at Sue and left the counter. ‘Two hours early,’ she thought as she made her way to the front door. It could only be one person; everyone else just walked in.
She almost didn’t want to answer the door. Give him a chance to go away on his own. But at the same time, the thought of him being on the other side of the made a smile appear on her lips. A second knock came, followed by the sound of his voice. Her stomach fluttered. All she wanted to do was see him. And she still wanted him to go away.
Slowly Leah opened the door. She couldn’t hide the light in her eyes when she saw him standing there at her door. But the fact he was so early made her nervous. “I would what?” Her eyes were questioning as she looked at his golden ones. Could he tell how scared she was? Scared of him and herself. “Come in,” she said coolly and moved to the side to let him in. The space she put between them these last five days are about to sink a lot more then she was comfortable. “We can go to the kitchen. I’m in the middle of cooking,” she said shutting the door behind him and heading back to the kitchen. Maybe if she just kept moving, he wouldn’t have a chance to question her.

For some reason he felt prepared. He felt confident. David felt ready to wring every last answer out of her once he saw her. Creeeeek. The door opened and there she was. Dark eyes beaming at him...almost as though she was happy to see him. No, that couldn't be it. She stepped aside for him to come in. Wait...That's it? The golden eyed shifter stared blankly at the woman standing before him. She just invited him in as if not having spoken for the past five days was normal. He really didn't get this girl. Deciding to play along he walked through the door, "Thanks."He found himself admiring the Clearwater Residence interior. It was treat to admire from outside but the inside had that same cozy sort of feeling. Ironic how someone as cold as Leah lived in such a warm looking place. The thought almost forced a chuckle out of him but he had to remain serious. In the midst of his admiring he heard Leah speak of her cooking preparations. Before he knew it she was strolling past him, rather quickly. "Whoa, slow down," David called out to hear following her to the kitchen, keeping up with her. As they neared the kitchen David attempted to reach for her arm, "Hold it! We need to talk. Why have you been-" he cut himself off once he caught sight of Sue, cutting away at some fruit. "H-Hello, Sue," David stuttered slightly, greeting the elder responsible for his honorary membership of sorts, as well as Leah's mother. The kind woman greeted David with a warm smile. A smile every caring mother could somehow pull off to ease any tense moment. With close examination, he could read the apology in her features. Apologizing for Leah's behavior no doubt. The scent that filled his nostrils outside were overpowering in the kitchen. David couldn't help but think mouthwatering-quality cooking was going on in this kitchen. Jacob and the others weren't kidding when they said the food would be to die for. Hopefully it tasted as good as it smelled. Not wanting to get in the way of the whole cooking process...yet...David simply stood back and leaned against the wall, arms crossed and foot tapping lightly in impatience. Sue's presence was always welcomed to David, but right now he was kind of hoping that the two could be left alone. He hadn't seen Leah for five days, hadn't heard her voice and here she was acting as if everything was alright. Couldn't she see just how upset he was? How confused he must have been the past few days? He could go on and on. There was so much he just wanted to ask. He also wanted to talk about that night, if things were as he thought they were or not. But how could he do any of that when they weren't speaking? He would spare Leah the lengthy whining and just come out and simply ask: "So, was it something I did?" he finally asked rather bluntly in his bold manner. He wasn't one to beat around the bush. Sue looked up from her cutting, almost shocked, but then began to hold back a laugh. David couldn't tell if it was one of disbelief or admiration. Maybe a mix of both? She placed her knife on the counter, 'I'll leave you to it.' With that, Mrs. Clearwater left the two shifters alone, passing David as he gave her one of his infamous grins. Golden eyes falling on Leah now, he shrugged, "So?" he pressed. He knew he was being rather pushy about it, but hey, could you blame him? Of course she didn't have to answer him right away. He just wanted to let her know, he wasn't going to pretend the last several days didn't happen. ================================ WORD COUNT;; 795 RP WITH;; leah :] NOTES;; sorry if ya wanted sue around lol we could always bring her back.
